Benedictine monastery of St Peter and St Paul, Ilsenburg
The remains of the monastery complex and the monastery church with its fortified fieldstone tower date from the 11th century.
It was first built in 1078-1087, and there were many alterations up until into the 16th century. The buildings on the south side of the monastery were seriously damaged during the Peasant War in 1525. The west side was converted into a neo-Romanesque castle in 1862. The remains of a richly-decorated Romanesque plaster floor can be seen. The finely wrought baroque high altar is also interesting. The monastery is being renovated by a charitable foundation of the princess of Stolberg-Wernigerode.
