Brick church of St. Nicholas, Beuster
The collegiate church of St. Nicholas is the oldest brick church in Germany. The Augustinian monastery in Beuster had a powerful impact on the Christianisation of the Altmark from 1150.
The church was originally built as a three-nave pier basilica. In the 14th century, the shape of the ceiling was altered when it was vaulted. Foundation walls discovered during excavations suggest that the structure was larger before the 30 Years War. The strike plate on the door of the south porch and the late Romanesque baptismal font from the first half of the 13th century are particularly attractive.
