Cathedral and chatedral treasure of Halberstadt
The cathedral of St. Stephen was built between 1236 and 1486, following the collapse of a 9th century Carolingian building and the destruction by fire of an Ottonian building on the same site.
The diocese of Halberstadt (804-1648) was one of the most important in the empire. The cathedral treasure is remarkable. We are indebted to a cathedral chapter of various denominations that an ensemble of mediaeval works of art has survived which is without equal in any other church in Germany. Tapestries, ninety liturgical vestments, relics, carvings and much more are evidence of the cathedrals former glory.
