Nienburg monastery church
Having suffered fires and undergone rebuilding, the site founded as a monastery in 975 today illustrates the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic periods.
In 970, Margrave Thietmar of Meissen and Archbishop Gero of Cologne founded an abbey in Thankmarsfelde, which they transferred to Nienburg in 975.
In 975, Margrave Thietmar of Meissen and Archbishop Gero of Cologne transferred the abbey they had founded in Thankmarsfelde to Nienburg. In 1042 and 1242, the church buildings were destroyed by fire. In 1280, a new church with a three-nave hall was built. It was extended in 1526, when a rectangular tower was added. The remains of the decorated stucco floor are of interest, as is the column with representations of the months, which was excavated in an anteroom to the choir in 1840.
