Rohrberg village church

Rohrberg, first documented in 1212, has a late Romanesque village church with an interesting, later interior, in common with many of the parishes of the Altmark.

Built in the second half of the 12th century, the church is typical of its time and place: constructed from regular layers of field stone, the rectangular nave has a tower at its west end and a rectangular choir to the east with a recessed apse. The interior has a flat ceiling. However, Rohrberg’s church was altered considerably in the 18th and particularly in the 19th century. Its interior decoration reflects several centuries of the region’s art history.
Of its furnishings, only the baptismal font has survived from Romanesque times. Its chalice-shaped bowl rests on a cubical capital. Also of note is a bronze bell from 1337; the caster immortalised himself on it with a carved drawing and the inscription ‘ego sum hermannus’ (I am Hermann).
